Point Defiance Park
Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium, Tacoma, WA
Access: Easy Shore Entry
Aquatic Life: 4
Hop in the water right out in front of the covered picnic area. The bottom drops off steeply straight off the beach. Descend to about 90-95ft and turn left. Follow the contour at 95ft and you’ll come to a small sunken barge covered with barnacles and sculpin. There is nearly always a current here and the bottom is sand and gravel so it doesn’t stir up too badly making this a good site for macro for photography. Popular Six Gill Shark site in the summer time.
This site is very current sensitive with nothing to hold on to when it picks up. It is deep so watch your bottom time - the only features to see are at about 90ft. Also, this site is not open at night so make sure you are out before they close the gates (the park closes at 9:00 I believe).
How to get there:
Located at the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium park. From I-5, take exit 133 and stay on I-705 (the road forks a couple of times). Take the Schuster Pkwy exit and turn right. Continue on this road for about 5 miles as it turns to Ruston Way, then Gallagher Dr., then N 51st St. Turn right at N Pearl and continue on Roberts Garden Rd. Slight right at 5 Mile Dr. (There are 2 streets names Five Mile Dr. Take the middle road, not the hard right because it will just bring you back to the same road, and if you go straight you’ll stay on Roberts) Stay on this for almost a mile until you get to Owens Beach Rd and take a right. Park down by the water.
