Long Sandy Beach ,
South Beach is a gently sloping sand/cobble beach that runs for over 2 miles toward Cattle Point. The dive here is shallow (15-45') and seemingly flat with bands of eel grass in the 15-25' range and kelp, both of which harbor species of small life such as gunnels, nudibranchs. Flat fish and dogfish may be seen in the open. There is no large reef structure to look at and likewise the sealife is small, but it makes an interesting change of local dive scenery.
Divers may experience current running to the left (east). Fortunately there is plenty of room to exit the water so divers can drift along as far as they are willing to walk back.
How to get there:
South Beach is located on the southeastern point of San Juan Island, about 2 miles from Cattle Point. From Friday Harbor, head out of town on Spring Street past the airport. Turn left on Douglas Rd and head 1.5 miles and turn left onto Little Rd. Half mile then Right onto Cattle Point Rd. Take a right onto Picket Ln which will bring you right to the parking lot above the water.
