Large Rock Formation / Pinnacle, Boulder Pile / Shelves, Kelp Forest, Eel Grass Beds
The site offers two dives located both to the right and left of the small bay. The bay is shallow and sandy but the sides have rocky ledges that continue below the surface. Thick kelp barriers grow in the summer. The life intensifies as you reach farther out of the bay.
- East Side (left) has a long rock wall that drops nearly 50' below the surface. A thick kelp barrier grows during the summer and rocky ledges and boulders continue below the base of the wall.
- West Side (right) has a rock formation that jets out into the bay. Explore this and around it along the wall toward the west.
There are odd circular currents that run through the bay in different directions. Dive on mild exchanges or during slack for the best experience.
How to get there:
Use current prediction from Discovery Island and add 1:16 to the slack before flood and :56 before ebb.
Deadman Cove is located just south of Lime Kiln Point State Park on the West Side of San Juan Island about 17 miles west of Friday Harbor. Drive on the main road out of Friday Harbor nearly 7 miles and turn left on Mitchell Bay Rd and go 3 miles toward San Juan County Park and continue 2 miles past the entrance toward Lime Kiln Park.. Just past the entrance to Lime Kiln Point Park you'll find a turn out on the right side of the road where you can park and walk down the hill to the cove.
