Ruben Tarte is a gem of a shore dive site with easy access to a beautiful shallow reef. This site is full of the life that one expects to see in current swept sites around the San Juans including wide varieties of sponges, anemones, crab and other invertebrates, cucumbers, stars and urchins, and an impressive assortment of fish.
Enter the water in the cove at the road and swim out to the point on the right. Descend and dive the wall that drops down to 30' deep and continue to explore the cascading boulders down to about 60'.
Occasionally the road to the water is closed to vehicles making for a long walk in gear. Current intensive so plan to dive at slack. Slack adjustments for the San Jaun Channel are 23 minutes later for flood and 1 hour early for Ebb.
How to get there:
From Friday Harbor, head toward Roche Harbor on Roche Harbor Rd northward for about 6.5mi. Turn right on Rouleau Rd and go 1 mile, then Right on Limestone Point Rd for about another mile until it dead-ends into San Juan Dr. Take a Left on San Juan Dr and then a left onto Ruben Tarte Rd. You can drive down to the water and drop gear, then return back up the hill for parking.
