Features

Large Wreck,

Description

The G.B. Church is a 165' freighter that sits just off from a small island called Portland, a short distance away from Sidney. Interestingly there is life inside the wreck as well as on the outer surfaces. Depths range about 75' - 90' at the bottom and the tower is in about 30' with the masts extending even higher. The deck sits at roughly 50'. There are buoys marking the bow and stern. Navigation is simple and current is minimal on this ship except in large exchanges. There are large swim-throughs with minimal hazzards which make this a great site for new wreck divers and recreational divers alike.

Special Restrictions:

Current sensitive during large exchanges. Marine preserve - no spear-fishing or collection allowed. It is not advisable to enter any wreck unless properly trained.

How to get there:

Out of Sidney on the southeast side of Portland Island. Mooring buoy located on site.

This is a fun fairly easy dive providing you watch the tide tables. Lots of life including some very large lings and in the spring one can find huge puget sound king crabs all over the decks. Swim throughs are open and easy makes for a pretty fun piece of playground equipment!

I really liked this wreck. The cargo hold is cool with the beams overhead and life covering everything. The swim throughs were straight foward and the wreck is clean of most snags. I really enjoyed this dive.

What a fun, easy wreck dive. We droped right down the bouy line onto the deck @ 50' and explored the outside before venturing inside the coridors and swim-throughs. The compartments are clearand clean, with large easy access. A good dive for beginner wreck divers or non-wreck trained recreational divers.
