Wall, Large Rock Formation / Pinnacle, Boulder Pile / Shelves, Kelp Forest
Race Rocks consists of The Great Race Rock and several surrounding rock formations that breach the surface all aptly named North, Central, and West Race Rocks, plus Rosedale Rock to the south and a couple of pinnacles. There is a wall at the north side of West Race Rocks.
Race Rocks are famed for the density of life that covers the rocks within recreational diving limits, surrounding bull kelp forests...and for sea lion encounters, especially in the winter time. Many ships have wrecked among these rocks over the years and a diver may occasionally see debris or artifacts.
Intense currents. Anchoring is prohibited so a live boat is required. Be prepared with s surface signal marker of some sort so that your boat can find you in the likely event that you come up far from your entry point. Great Race Rock can offer some protection from the current if you dive the opposite side of the rock.
How to get there:
Located on the South end of Victoria in the Straights of Jaun de Fuca. You can launch out of the Pedder Bay Marina or get on one of the local charters. Great Race Rock is marked by a lighthouse.
