Features

Wall, Large Rock Formation / Pinnacle, Boulder Pile / Shelves, Kelp Forest

Description

Race Rocks consists of The Great Race Rock and several surrounding rock formations that breach the surface all aptly named North, Central, and West Race Rocks, plus Rosedale Rock to the south and a couple of pinnacles. There is a wall at the north side of West Race Rocks.

Race Rocks are famed for the density of life that covers the rocks within recreational diving limits, surrounding bull kelp forests...and for sea lion encounters, especially in the winter time. Many ships have wrecked among these rocks over the years and a diver may occasionally see debris or artifacts.

Special Restrictions:

Intense currents. Anchoring is prohibited so a live boat is required. Be prepared with s surface signal marker of some sort so that your boat can find you in the likely event that you come up far from your entry point. Great Race Rock can offer some protection from the current if you dive the opposite side of the rock.

How to get there:

Located on the South end of Victoria in the Straights of Jaun de Fuca. You can launch out of the Pedder Bay Marina or get on one of the local charters. Great Race Rock is marked by a lighthouse.

We dove the great race rock with Ogden Point Dive center. What a fabulous dive! We were hoping to see sealions, and at first didnt see any. after I got over the dissapointment, I enjoyed a nice swim through the kelp forest that was easy to swim through with lots of life to see. We then moved back out over the beds of Matridiam and on our way to the surface, finally got to see our sea lion as he snuck up from beneath me. What fun! A great site, even without the sealion encounter. Thanks to Ogden Point!

We dove the Great Race Passage with Ogden Point Dive Center who gave a great dive briefing. It was fantastic! There is a kelp bed near shore that is easy to navigate, a large field of plumose anemones and the rocks resembled milti-colored flower garden. We had a very larg sea lion came to investigate us during our safety stop. All around a beautiful dive.
