Sea Pens  (Order Pennatulacea)

A colonizing group of soft coral made up of individual anemone-like polyps, each with 8 tentacles. One polyp changes form to create an anchor while others adapt to become branches or organs. They prefer deeper water with soft current and open sandy ocean floors. They feed on plankton and are preyed upon by nudibranchs and sea stars. When touched they will emit a green bioluminescence and retract their body down to their stalk.
