Chiton  (Class Polyplacophora)

There are roughly 1000 known existing species of Chiton. They range from intertidal zones to deep water. Their shell is made up of 8 plates held together by a “girdle” which disintegrates once the chiton dies, leaving behind the butterfly shaped plates. They move slowly using their muscular foot that can cling powerfully to rocks. Most eat algae, bryozoans, diatoms and sometimes bacteria, and a few species are predatory, eating small invertebrates.
