Butterfly Crab  (Cryptolithodes typicus)

A cool find for divers, the Butterfly Crab resembles a broken piece of clam shell on the bottom and is often difficult to spot unless it moves. It may grow to just over 3" across its shell and can be found ant varying depths from intertidal to beyond recreational diving limits. Colors vary greatly.

It is very similar in appearance to the Umbrella Crab, the difference is that the nose does not flare out on the Butterfly crab and it lacks the head spike on the shell.
