Sticklebacks  (Gasterosteidae)

Gasterosteidae are family of fish commonly referred to as "sticklebacks and tube-snouts". Thaey are kept together in our website due to their similarities, although tube-snouts actually comprise a family of their own, Aulorhynchidae.

An unusual features of sticklebacks and tube-snouts is that they have no scales, although some species have bony armour plates. Both are closely related to pipefish and seahorses. When mating, males build a nest using sticky secretions from their kidneys, then guard the nest after eggs have been laid by the females.
