Misc. Flat Fish  (Order Pleuronectiformes )

Flatfish range in size from only a few inches to species that can reach 9ft and 800lbs. Flatfish begin their lives upright but within days one eye migrates to the side, the mouth contorts and the dorsal grows forward toward the head as it adapts to its life on the bottom. Most can change colors to match the surroundings and they bury themselves in sand with only the eyes exposed while waiting to ambush prey. Generally, most species of Flatfish have the eye on the left side of their head and lay on their right side (including most Flounder, Halibut, Sole, Sanddabs, Turbot and Plaice.) Toungfish and Broadsoles are typically reversed.
