Grunt Sculpin  (Rhamphocottus richardsonii)

Grunt Sculpin are a fascinating Sculpin reaching only 3 ¼” in length. In Washington and BC they can be found in tide pools and by SCUBA divers around rocky reefs in shallow water. In California they will venture quite deep to reach cold water. Its name is derived from the odd sound it makes when removed from the water. This sculpin is an awkward swimmer, choosing to “hop” along the bottom on its fingerlike pectoral fins. Its eyes move independently. During spawning, the female traps the male in a crevice, lays her eggs and traps the male until he fertilizes the eggs, at which point he is free to go.
