Rockfish  (Genus Sebastidae, Family Scorpaenidae )

There are over 100 known species of Rockfish most inhabiting the North Pacific Ocean that vary greatly in color and pattern, and it is the largest Genus of fish on the U.S.-Canada pacific coast. Often referred to as Rock Cod by fishermen and erroneously sold as snapper, sea bass or codfish, over fishing has taken a toll on the numbers but efforts are being made to reestablish populations in many states and countries. Care should be taken in the handling of Rockfish as they possess very sharp, mildly venomous spines in the dorsal, anal and ventral fins. Spear fishing of these fish is banned in many places. All are ovoviviparous, meaning they produce live embryos. They are commonly seen by SCUBA divers and are often indifferent to their presence.
